
What is Modbus ® agreement?
The Modbus protocol is a message passing structure developed by Modicon in 1979. It is used to establish client server communication between smart devices. It is a de facto standard, truly open, and the most widely used network protocol in industrial manufacturing environments. Hundreds of suppliers have implemented it on thousands of different devices for transferring discrete/analog I/O and register data between control devices. It is a common language or common standard among different manufacturers. A report refers to it as the 'de facto standard for multi vendor integration'. Industry analysts report that there are 7 million Modbus nodes in North America and Europe alone.

Modbus is used for monitoring and programming devices in multiple client server applications; Used for communication between smart devices, sensors, and instruments; Used for monitoring on-site devices using PC and human-machine interface. Modbus is also an ideal protocol for RTU applications that require wireless communication. Therefore, it is widely used in countless natural gas, oil, and substation applications. But Modbus is not just an industrial protocol. Buildings, infrastructure, transportation, and energy applications also fully utilize their advantages.
What is Modbus TCP/IP protocol?
TCP/IP is a common transmission protocol of the Internet. In fact, it is a group of layered protocols, providing a reliable data transmission mechanism between machines. Ethernet has become the de facto standard for company enterprise systems, and therefore it has also become the de facto standard for factory networks. Ethernet is not a new technology, it has matured to the point where the cost of implementing this network solution is comparable to today's fieldbus. In order to bring Modbus into the 21st century, an open Modbus TCP/IP specification was developed in 1999. By combining the feature rich, scalable, and ubiquitous physical network (Ethernet) with the universal network standard (TCP/IP) and vendor neutral data representation, Modbus provides a truly open and accessible network for process data exchange. It is easy to implement for any device that supports TCP/IP sockets.
Where is Modbus TCP/IP used?
Modbus TCP/IP has become ubiquitous due to its openness, simplicity, low-cost development, and the minimum hardware required to support it. There are hundreds of Modbus TCP/IP devices on the market, and more are being developed every year. It is used for exchanging information between devices, monitoring them, and programming them. It is also used to manage distributed I/O and is the preferred protocol for manufacturers of such devices.
Why should Modbus TCP/IP be used?
When choosing a network for a device, Modbus TCP/IP provides several significant advantages:
- Simplicity:Modbus TCP/IP simply wraps TCP/IP around the Modbus instruction set. If you already have a Modbus driver and understand Ethernet and TCP/IP sockets, you can start and communicate with your PC within a few hours. The development cost is exceptionally low. With minimal hardware, it can be easily developed on any operating system.
- Standard Ethernet:You can communicate with your newly implemented device using a standard PC Ethernet card without the need for a special chipset. As the cost of Ethernet decreases, you benefit from lower hardware prices, performance improves from 10 Mb to 100 Mb, and even 1 Gb soon after, and your technology also improves, protecting your investment. You are no longer limited to the support of vendors, but have received support from thousands of developers around the world who are turning Ethernet and the Internet into the network tools of the future. This effort was also supplemented by the timely allocation of the famous Ethernet port 502 for the Modbus TCP/IP protocol.
- Openness:The Modbus protocol was transferred from Schneider Electric to the Modbus organization in 2004, marking a commitment to openness. The specifications can be downloaded for free, and there is no need for subsequent licensing fees when using Modbus or Modbus TCP/IP protocols. Additional example code, implementation examples, and diagnostic information can be obtained on the Modbus TCP toolkit, which is a free benefit for Modbus organization members and can also be purchased by non members.

How to implement Modbus TCP/IP devices?
To implement Modbus ® TCP/IP devices can download the Modbus TCP/IP protocol specification and Modbus TCP/IP implementation guide from the website. You also need to understand the basics of how to implement TCP drivers. To test your driver program, you need at least two devices: a server and a client for exchanging information. This can be two PCs communicating with each other using standard Ethernet cards, or one PC communicating with a sensor or device on an embedded microcomputer.
Can I use Modbus TCP/IP over the Internet?
Modbus TCP/IP is an Internet protocol. TCP/IP as the transmission protocol of the Internet means that Modbus TCP/IP can be used on the Internet. It is designed to achieve this goal. In practice, this means that Modbus TCP/IP devices installed in Europe can be addressed from anywhere in the world via the Internet. The impact on equipment suppliers or end-users is endless. Remote maintenance and repair of equipment using PC and browser can reduce support costs and improve customer service. Logging into the factory's control system from home allows maintenance engineers to maximize the factory's normal operating time and reduce on-site time. Can existing Modbus devices communicate with Modbus TCP/IP?
Due to the fact that Modbus TCP/IP is only a Modbus protocol with TCP encapsulation, existing Modbus devices can easily communicate through Modbus TCP/IP. Gateway devices are required to convert the current physical layer (RS232, RS485, or other) to Ethernet and Modbus protocol to Modbus TCP/IP. This gateway device can be implemented using a PC. Commercial products can be obtained from multiple different manufacturers. The Modbus device database can help you identify gateways and other Modbus devices.
What performance can I expect from a Modbus TCP/IP system?
Performance depends on the network and hardware. If you run Modbus TCP/IP over the Internet, it will not have a better response time than typical Internet. However, for communication purposes of debugging and maintenance, this may be completely sufficient and can avoid situations where you have to take a flight or go to the site on Sunday morning.
For high-performance enterprise internal networks with high-speed Ethernet switches to ensure performance, the situation is completely different. In theory, Modbus TCP/IP can transmit data with up to 250/(250+70+70) or approximately 60% efficiency during large-scale register transfers. Due to the fact that 10BaseT Ethernet can transmit approximately 1.25 Mbps, the theoretical throughput is 1.25M/2 * 60%=360000 registers per second, while 100BaseT speed is 10 times higher.

The actual testing conducted by Nidec Electric uses MOMENTUM with Ethernet I/O ™ Ethernet PLC demonstrated that it can scan up to 4000 I/O bases per second, with each I/O base having up to 16 12 bit analog I/O or 32 discrete I/O. Although this is below the theoretical limit calculated above, please remember that the tested device only runs on an 80186 CPU at 50 MHz and has an effective computing power of 3 MIPS (compared to a 500 MHz, 700 MIPS Pentium).
